The Calling

The Calling

The calling is heard throughout the entire world, in the heart of every person, yet too few answer it. The calling is the voice that gently whispers that something here is not quite right, that you are far more than you think you are—far more than what you were taught about yourself. It is the voice inviting you home, heralding the dawn that will rise—if only you choose to listen and begin the long journey back to who you truly are.

This subtle calling is experienced differently by different people; its interpretations may vary, yet one thing unites them all: it is Life, Creation, Source, God—summoning you to set out on the path. This path neither begins nor ends in any particular place; it demands no true sacrifice from you, only that you be willing to relearn who and what you are, and therefore what the world must be. A change of identity—something I will repeat in various passages throughout this book—is what truly frightens you. It took me a long time to reach this point, and I would never have arrived without help. And help is certain: everyone who answers the calling receives it.

The world in which we appear to live is a world of separation: I end here, you begin there; you think and experience what you experience, I think and experience what I experience. Each of us has a private world bounded by the limits of the body. Yet the body cannot contain what we imagine resides within it. The reality hidden from our eyes—one that will be revealed to us, bit by bit, through learning and awakening—is that the body lies outside us, and our minds are united. Everything I think affects you, and everything you think affects me.

Therefore, I have taken upon myself the ultimate responsibility—the responsibility every person who chooses the light accepts: responsibility for your inner peace. In every thought, every word, and every action, I keep before my eyes the calling to free you from the chains that have bound you, because in doing so I free myself.
